O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) and she completed her studies in 1981 at the North High School in Wheaton. Her appearances in commercials before shifting in Los Angeles in 1986. The first time she worked, O'Grady was an Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows and appeared in made for TV and independent films. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired, secretariat character between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
